Memorial Service for Jennie Currie

A memorial service for the late Janet "Jennie" McWilliam Currie was held at Armstrong on Sept. 23 following her death on Sept. 9 at the age of 91.

A long-time resident of Armstrong, here for 52 years, she was born at Durrisdeer, Scotland on May 4, 1908. She arrived in Canada in 1929 with her family via ocean liner to live in the Hespero area of Alberta where she resided until moving to Armstrong.

Throughout her life in Armstrong, she was an active member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Her other interests included cooking (she was a fabulous cook), reciter of verses (for everything and for every occasion) and her friends.

Her summers at Mabel Lake were very special to her. She began going there with Mr. Cuthbert and Miss Charlton many years ago. After they had died, Jenny Currie became the beach matriarch, holding court on her verandah, and watching several generations of families pass by her property. She basically spent just about every summer there where she loved to walk with her dogs, visit with friends and sit on her porch.

Graveside services were held on Sept. 15 at Hespero Cemetery, Hespero, Alta. The memorial service was held Sept. 23 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church with Rev. Don Lindsay officiating.

She is survived by her brother, Coupland Currie, at Rocky Mtn. House; sister Georgina Cole at Eckville; nieces Yevonne (Ken) Dent, Bernice (Glen) Stamp and Moira (Eric) Manner fieldt; and nephew Ian (Phylis) Cole. She was predeceased by her parents George and Margaret Currie, sisters Violet Clifton and Mary Smith and niece Violet Cole.

Mountain View Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

Armstrong Advertiser 29 Sep 1999.
