deRuiter, Sander Johannes "Sam" passed away suddenly at Monte Creek, BC on Thursday, March 28, 2002 at the age of 47 years. Sam was born July 9, 1954 in Tricht, Buurmalsen, a small town in the Netherlands. He was the third child of Huibert and Catherina deRuiter who made the decision to immigrate to Canada in 1956, when Sam was just 18 months old. They rented and owned dairy farms in Chilliwack, Rosedale, and Aggasiz for many years until moving to Enderby when Sam was 16 to purchase a farm so that he and his two brothers, Case and Herb, could farm. At the age of 19, Sam left home to work on his own, ending up in Chilliwack where he rented a farm to raise heifers while working in construction, building barns. In 1977, at a youth retreat Sam met his future bride , Corrine Vanderwiel, from Burnaby, BC. The following year he returned home and purchased what is now Springbend Farms from his father, forming a partnership with his brothers. Sam and Corrine married April 6, 1979 and were blessed with five children; Kathryn, Rachel, Sandy, Herb, and Desiree. In 1983, the family suffered the loss of Grandpa deRuiter, who died in a farming accident. In the following years, Sam bought his brothers’ shares in the farm and began farming on his own. Sam loved farming and his appreciation for quality purebred Holsteins inspired his drive to consistently better hi herd and operation. With his wife and children and a strong faith in God, Sam pursued his dreams in the footsteps of his father. He firmly believed that it was by the grace of God that he was able to fulfill his dreams and had a strong conviction that God is in control. His favorite verse was Proverbs 3:5,6 (NIV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight."
