FOWLER

Kenneth Earl Fowler, born May 30, 1957, Armstrong, B.C., passed away Februaru 12, 2003, Victoria, B.C. Ken passed away suddenly in the intensive care unit of Victoria General Hospital following comlications of a serious illness. Ken was recently predeceased by his mother, Dinty Hill. Ken is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Wendy, children, Charlotte and Clinton; his father, Terry (Nancy) Fowler; siblings Fred (Shirley), Bob (Kathy), Bill (Kathy), Karen and Gene (Brenda); nieces, nephews, teammates, work mates, fish mates, and many other dear friends. Those who knew Ken knew him to be a generous and trustworthy guy who was committed to and valued his family, his friends, and his Thrifty Foods family. He loved to fish, play ball, curl and eat Chinese food. People will remember his quick, witty sense of humour and his obsession for nicknaming. As manager of Broadmead Thrifty Foods, Ken was a compassionate and supportive boss with a strong work ethic. Ken's position required many hours in the office (e-mailing Phil, Danny, Peter, and Bill), yet his favourite place was to be on the floor with employees and customers. Ken had great respect for Ernie Skinner and Alex Campbell and greatly appreciated their trust and the learning opportunities they provided for him. Ken was a key member of the M.B.'s slopitch team and developed long and lasting friendships with his teammates. He shared his father's love of curling with the M.B.'s and thus continued their camaraderie throughout the winter. His teammates remember Ken for his spirit, understanding, encouragement and support, whether the team was winning or losing. He will be greatly missed by the M.B.'s and their families. His heart and spirit will be with them forever. My marriage to Ken was based on love, trust and respect. We enjoyed spending time together, watching Crocodile Hunter and Hockey Night in Canada, fine dining, and hanging out at home. Ken loved to come home to our family and was a very involved daddy to Charlotte, 7, and Clinton, 4 - he was up many nights comforting the kids. From playing horse to building forts, telling stories of his childhood on the farm with his brothers and sister, and sharing his passion for cooking, fishing, and the outdoors, he was their best friend and playmate. Their time together was precious and far too short. wendy, family and friends, wish to express thanks to Alex Campbell and the Thrifty Foods family, the special Drs. and nurses of RJH and VGH ICUs; the Christian community, especially Victoria Harvest Church and Lambrick Park Church; the Master Batters and their families; the many others whose prayers and support have been and are so important during this difficult time. The outpouring of love and compassion demonstrated in the weeks of Ken's illness and following his death will always be remembered and are a testament to Ken's character and the impact he had on so many lives. FOURNIER

A LIFE REMEMBERED

Roger Fournier was born on July 1, 1915 at Pincher Creek, Alta. to Jean Baptise and Mae Edith Fournier. Roger was the third son of 8 children. He left home when he was 15 and rode the rails to Cornwall, Ont. where his older brother, Romeo lived. Roger drove a horse-drawn bread wagon there for two years.. He returned to southern Alberta and did various things, one of them was to work for his Uncle Joe Fournier, shipping livestock. Others were, working an oldtimer's trapline, driving taxi, and whatever other jobs were available during the 30's. Somewhere during this prewar period he was a member of the B.C, Police Force in Cranbrook for 2 or 3 years, and then a coal miner in Fernie for about 5 years. In 1942 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and worked with a mobilization unit building the telegraph line to Alaska until 1946. From 1946 to 1949 he was a brakeman on the rail line in the Kootenays. Any of you who knew Roger, knew that a railway brakeman would not have many opportunities to flirt with the girls, so in 1949 he started driving Greyhound bus so he could take all the girls for a ride. But oops, this is where he got caught. Two French speaking sisters got on and rode directly behind the handsome driver who understood every word they said (but of course didn't let on until they were getting off the bus). This was the beginning of the romance that result in marriage, three children, and 49 years of happily married life. Roger and Terry were married in November of 1951. They settled in Camrose where Roger was a certified dynamite blaster on a seismic drilling rig for a couple of years. In 1953 it was time for the family man to settle down so a small general store was purchased at Montrose, B.C. Later that year in August, Louise arrived. New challenges lay ahead so in 1957 the store was sold and Canada Safeway in Calgary was the new career for Roger. Big city life did not appeal so in 1958 Roger and Terry moved to Enderby and a couple of months later to Lumby and the Kit Carson Guest Ranch. The winters must have been long because Terry arrived in 1959. In 1961 and '62 Kelowna and the Mountain Shadows Riding Stable was home and baby #3, John, put in an appearance. The winter of 1961 and "62 was a hard one for Roger. Terry was hospitalized for two months with Rheumatic Fever. During this time Roger prided himself on having the diapers on the line before breakfast. From Kelowna the family moved to Nelson, B.C. in 1963 where Roger managed a branch office for Miller and Brown trucking. They came back to Kelowna in 1966 and then to the farm in Armstrong in 1967. Roger was a salesman for Reliance Motors. He tried a few other things before he retired for health reasons in 1972. After his health slowed him down, Roger always kept a few critters around for company and enjoyment for himself and his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed his goats and lambs and the odd horse from time to time. In 1990 they sold the farm and moved into Armstrong. Although Roger had difficulty getting around he did enjoy riding his "scooter" around town and visiting his friends. His favorite pass time was teasing "pretty" girls and he will be long remembered for the many laughs shared by all.
