NEEDOBA

Lesly Charles Needoba service this Saturday

A memorial service for the late Lesly Charles Needoba will be held on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at Zion United Church.

Mr. Needoba died on Jan. 16 at the age of 84 years. Born on Sept. 29, 1918 at Melville, Sask., Les moved with his family to British Columbia in 1919. A year later they moved to Portland, Ore. Where they lived for nine years before returning to B.C.

Les married Elsie Thomas at Armstrong on March 30, 1941. Together they farmed a large acreage on Grandview Flats where they raised their four children. In 1969, they moved to Armstrong and built their own home on Van Kleek Avve.

As well as farming, Mr. Needoba worked at Armstrong Sawmill, B.C. Pea Growers, Armstrong Lockers for 10 years as a meat cutter at the Army Camp at Vernon. He also worked at Buckerfield’s for 20 years until retiring from there in 1985.

Mr. Needoba was a member of the Rocky Mountain Rangers from 1940 to 1945. He served on the water board of Grandview Flats and was a volunteer fireman for many years.

Throughout his life, he loved the great outdoors, gardening, hunting, camping, curling, photography, trips, family gatherings and especially fishing. He was an avid stamp collector as well as a creative and gifted artist and craftsman.

After retirement, Mr. Needoba became a member of the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery where he devoted many hours researching archives, compiling data for family research and helping organize art events. His later years were devoted to the care of his wife, Elsie. He sought solace in his beautiful flower gardens where he tended and loved to share with others.

Mr. Needoba is survived by his wife of 62 years. Elsie; three daughters Gerry (Elmer) Cucheron at Armstrong, Shirley (Garnet) States at Armstrong and Janet (Fred) McCullough at Sidney, son Bill Needoba (Mary Cunningham) at Burnaby, eight grandchildren Todd (Lori) Cucheron, Kevin (Jill) Cucheron, Lorenna (Steve) Dubland, Jacqui (Wade) Schneider, Brent (Tracey) McCullough, Darren (Shelli) McCullough, Shannon (Jared) Wight and Michael McCullough; nine great grandchildren Justine, Rachel, Lauren, Noelle, Conner, Nathanael, Bergen, Kaylee and Austin, several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Mr. Needoba was predeceased by brother Clay and sisters Alice and Lil. Rev. Lorraine Powell will officiate at the Saturday service. Friends are invited for refreshments following the service. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Les, donations may be made to the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery, the Hospice House at Vernon, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. or a chrity of your choice.

NELSON

Nelson service held Monday

Funeral service for the late Eda Martha Nelson was held at 11 a.m. Monday, following her peaceful death at her Armstrong home on March 26. She was 88.

Eda was born and raised in Salmon Arm and moved to Armstrong 54 years ago. She owned and operated a hairdressing shop at Armstrong for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, United Church and enjoyed bowling, playing cards and visiting with people.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by her two sons Carl (Nancy Gagnon) Peters at Quesnel, Ted (Audrey) Peters at Salmon Arm, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The service was conducted by Rev, Jim Lochhead at Mountain View Chapel. Interment followed in the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Cemetery.

Following the service, a tea was held at the chapel.

NICHOLAS

Alfred Nicholas service Nov. 5

Alfred Noel Nicholas, a resident of Armstrong for the past 10 years, died at Willowdale Home on Oct. 25 at the age of 87 years. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas moved to Armstrong from Vancouver.

Mr. Nicholas was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Seniors Club and was a past member of the Paint and Palette Club.

Predeceased by his wife, Rosemarie, on July 29, 1999, a joint memorial service will be conducted on Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church with Rev. Don Lindsay officiating. Cremation.

Mr. Nicholas is survived by his daughter, Sheila Robertson 9Bill) at Osoyoos, granddaughter Shelly Robertson (Brent) at North Vancouver, grandson Zach Robertson at the Caravan Farm at Armstrong. sister Cecily Nicholas at Southampton, Hampshire, England. He was predeceased by his twin brother, William Nicholas, at Southampton, England.

NICHOLAS

R.K. Nicholas death noted

Rosemarie Kathleen Nicholas of Armstrong died here on July 29 at the age of 85 years.

A resident of this city for the past 10 years, she was a former long-time resident of Vancouver.

Mrs. Nicholas was born in England. She worked as a librarian in the Hamble Library in Hampshire. In her spare time she enjoyed her family, her garden and pets. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred, at Armstrong, daughter Sheila Robertson 9Bill) at Calgary, two grandchildren, Shelley Robertson at Vancouver and Zach Robertson at Armstrong, and a sister-in-law Cecily Nicholas at Armstrong.

There was no service by family request. Cremation. Mountain View Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

NICHOLS

NICHOLS: Carroll Leone (Keech) Nichols born Dec. 11, 1930 in Winnipeg, Man., passed away July 11, 1999 at the Chetwynd General Hospital. Carroll was predeceased by her parents Jack and Leta Keech, brothers Ed and Allan, and her husband of 44 years, Tom Nichols. Carroll leaves to mourn her son Randy and his wife Tannia and her grandchildren Chuck, Brandy and Tommy of Chetwynd, her daughter Sherry Kathrien and grandchildren Kim (David) Mosher, Karen Bremner (Cody Davis) of Mayorthorpe, Richard Bremner of Chetwynd and one great grandchild Leona Mosher, her sister Joyce (Tony) Blackburn of Kamloops, and many other nieces and nephews, sister and brother-in-laws and friends. Memorial Service was held July 15, 1999 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Expressions of sympathy may be made by the way of donation to the Chetwynd Palliative Care Society.

NIELSEN

A. Miller Nielsen Passes Suddenly At Hullcar Home

All who knew Axel Miller Nielsen were shocked to hear that he had passed away peacefully in the early hours of last Friday morning, February 1, at his home at Hullcar.

Mr. Nielsen was born at Odense, Denmark, 71 years ago. He came to this country at the age of 17 and for several years he farmed in Saskatchewan.

In 1936 he came to the Armstrong district, staying for a time with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wilson, on Pleasant valley Road. He moved to Enderby where he engaged in farming for about seven years and then cam to Mountain View district for seven years. After that time he moved to Hullcar where he had remained the past four years.

Besides his loving wife, Annie, he is survived by one brother in Saskatchewan and one sister in Victoria. Several other brothers and sisters also survive him in Denmark.

Services for the late Mr. Nielsen were conducted from Zion United Church, Armstrong, on Tuesday, February 5, at 2 p.m. by Rev. Hugh M. Irwin of Enderby. Interment was made in the family plot at Hullcar Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Messrs. R. Lyster, R. Price, F. Parkinson, W. Thompson, J. Hayes, and F. Hitt.

Honorary pallbearers were Messrs. A. Forbes, H. Skelton, J. Paul, W. Parkinson, K. Matheson, and S. Parkinson.

NORMAN

Walton Norman service Sept.29

A longtime resident of Armstrong, E. Walton Norman died Sept. 25 at Pleasant Valley Manor at the age of 84.

Funeral for Mr. Norman will be held at Zion United Church this Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jim Lochhead officiating. Interment will follow at Armstrong-Spallumcheen Cemetery. Mountain View Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Born in 1915 and raised at Armstrong, Mr. Norman was the eldest child of Ernest and Jane Norman. He trained as a carpenter before he joined up in the air force during the Second World War. Afterwards, he farmed in Manitoba for 25 years before retiring to this area.

Mr. Norman continued active involvement in the community. He was also a longtime member of the IOOF, the United Church and for years custodian and maintenance man at the museum where his carpentry skills were put to use. Until health forced him to give it up, he was one of the volunteer drivers for the Meals On Wheels program in Armstrong.

Mr. Norman is survived by his daughter, Margaret (Bob) Galloway, a sister Joyce Jackie and brother Douglas (Claire).

Also surviving are two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, a niece and several nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen, in January this year, a son Ross and brother Franklyn.

NORMAN
Ana Norman service Feb. 28

A longtime Armstrong resident, Ana Rosa Norman (nee) Bradley died Feb. 23 at Polson Extended Care.

Prayers will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Armstrong on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. and Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at the same church. Rev. Fr. Leo Boyd O.M.I. celebrant.

Born in Paraguay on Sept. 28, 1914, Ana came to Armstrong with her family in 1930 where her father purchased a farm. She had three sisters and two brothers. The family moved to Armstrong to be closer to Mr.* Bradley’s brother who lived at Vernon. Ana married Fred Norman in 1935 and they had five children, Wilfred (who predeceased her), Roy (Bernice) at Calgary, Joan Prokopetz (Gordon) at Armstrong, Sharon McMullan (Don) at Clearwater, Robert (Diane) at Armstrong, 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great, great grandson.

Mrs. Norman loved the outdoors, gardening, flowers and animals. She especially enjoyed fishing and as a hobby did oil painting with several friends. She is remembered as a person who always had a cheerful smile and a keen sense of humor.

Mrs. Norman had resided at Willowdale Guest Home for the past few years and for a short time at Polson Extended Care at Vernon.

Interment will take place in the family plot of Armstrong Spallumcheen Cemetery. A reception will be held at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall immediately following the committal service. All are welcome.
