SHARP

Double Funeral Held For District Old-timers.

Double funeral services for the late Humbolt Sharp and his wife Mary Elizabeth Sharp, of Salmon River Valley district, were held from Zion United Church on Wednesday, December 24th, the Rev. L.B. Campbell officiating. Interment took place in the Armstrong Cemetery.

The passing of Mr. and Mrs. Sharp within one day of one another, removed two of Salmon River Valley's most highly respected old-timers, and was met with widespread regret throughout the community.

Mrs. Sharp passed away Sunday, December 21, at the home of Mrs. J.R. Freeze where for the past three months she had been receiving care. She was in her 84th year.

Mr. Sharp passed away on Monday, December 22, at the Vernon "Home for the Aged" where he entered as a patient about four weeks ago. He was in his 94th year.

The deceased were both natives of New Brunswick. Mr. Sharp was born in Woodstock, while his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth MacKenzie, was born at Glasgow, in that Maritime province.

They made their home in Woodstock after their marriage until 1907, moving westward that year with their family to Red Deer, Alberta. Being a nurseryman, Mr. Sharp brought with him a carload of young apple trees to start an orchard in the foothills province, but found it a poor fruit growing climate.

In 1910, the Sharp family came to settle in the Pleasant Valley area of Armstrong until Word War I, when they took up residence in the Salmon River Valley.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Sharp were actively interested in all community events until about two years ago when their health began to fail.

Mr. Sharp took keen interest in gardening, fruit growing and general farming. An apple variety, the Crimson Beauty, hybridized from the Red Astrakan and the Duchess by Mr. Sharp many years ago, is still found in the area. The apple never gained commercial popularity but is a fine variety for the home garden.

Surviving are two daughter, Mrs. Jim Haines of Silver Creek and Mrs, F. Erickson (Barbara) of Victoria; one son, Norris Sharp at Heywood's Corner; also eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Acting as pallbearers for Mrs. Sharp were Messrs. A.D. Heywood, Gordon Gray, D. Needoba, E. Needoba, M.C. Tucker and R. C. Freeze.

Mr. Sharp's pallbearers were members of Armstrong Canadian Legion, W.E. Wilson, Milton Mellish, Geo. A. Smith, John Fowler, Willis Hunter and G.A.File.
