VAN DER STAR Van der Star service March 1 Services will be held this week for a well-known Armstrong woman who was involved in many facets of the community. Hendrika (Ricky) Helena Van der Star (nee van der Veek) died peacefully at Pleasant Valley Manor on Feb. 22. Born Sept. 7, 1926, she immigrated to Canada in November 1951 with her new husband, Johannes (John). She has been a resident of Armstrong since settling here in 1952. During the past 50 years, Mrs. Van der Star was an active member if the Catholic Women’s League (over 25 years), the local Canadian Red Cross Society, and the Armstrong Garden Club. She also was active in the community volunteering for the Armstrong Wheels to Meals program. Ricky and John enjoyed gardening and loved flowers. Together they operated Star Nurseries for many years until retiring. Mrs. Van der Star was always up to challenges and was most recently remembered for starting to use a computer at age 70. She was often used as an example at Okanagan University College, where she took computer classes, how it was never too late to learn how to use a computer. Predeceased by her husband in 1991, Hendrika is survived by her three sons and daughter, Jack (Kathy), Diane (Jimmy) Brown, Ben (Karen) and Richard (Berni), and by her 10 grandchildren. She also is remembered by Klein Oma, her brothers and sisters and their families in Canada, the Netherlands and abroad. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to may send donations in memory of Hendrika Van der Star to the ALS Society of Canada. A prayer vigil will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with a funeral mass on March 1 at 1:30 p.m. Father Leo Boyd, O.M.I. will be celebrant. VAN WICKLIN Ollie Van Wicklin service held A memorial service was held Monday at 11 a.m. for the late Olive (Ollie) Van Wicklin. She was 94. A long time resident of Armstrong, Mrs. Van Wicklin died at Gateby at Vernon where she had been a resident. The service was conducted by Rev. Lorraine Powell at the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home. Cremation. A tea was held in the chapel tea room following the service. Mrs. Van Wicklin is survived by her granddaughter Cindy Van Wicklin at Armstrong, grandson Byron (Colleen) Van Wicklin and great granddaughters Yvonne and Marly, all of Nanaimo, daughter-in-law Sylvia (Carl) Spicer at Vernon, sister Alberta (Wayne) Frost and niece Anita (Chris) Pieper, all of Armstrong and many nieces and nephews. VEALE VEALE (nee Pringle): After a period of poor health Mary Edith Veale passed away suddenly and peacefully in the David Lloyd George Home in Kelowna, B.C. on Sunday afternoon, May 25, 2003. Edith devoted her life to the loving and continuing care and support of her family. She was greatly loved and respected and will be sorely missed by her children – Alan (Janet) in St. Catharines, Brian (Millie) in Calgary, Ken (Maureen) in Kelowna, Mary (Tom Mackie) in Vancouver and David (Mary) in Okotoks; by her 17 grandchildren; her nine great grandchildren; and her special friends Fritz and Sienie Bykerk in Silver Creek. Edith Veale was a virtually life-long resident of Salmon Arm area. She was born and grew up in Hullcar (near Amstrong) as Edith Pringle, taught school for several years in rural BC and Alberta. And then married Leslie Veale in 1932. together they farmed in Silver Creek and raised their five children. They retired to Salmon Arm in 1968. After Leslie’s death in 1987, Edith continued there until recently when she moved to a nursing home close to relatives in Kelowna. Edith was a long time member and supporter of the United Church and the Women’s Institute. A memorial Service will be held in the United Church in Salmon Arm at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, with tea following in the Church Hall. VICE Terence Wynne Vice passed away at Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong, BC., Monday, Nov. 4, 2002 at the age of 47 years. Born in East London, South Africa, Friday, Jan. 21, 1955, Terry was raised in Zambia during his early years on a farm in the African bush. Later his family moved to Rhodesia. He served 6 years with the Rhodesian Army. Initially in the Rhodesian Light Infantry, he later joined the Special Forces Selous Scouts. His bush craft and tracking skills were renowned. In 1978 he married Jane and they honeymooned on the Greek Islands as well as visiting Rome and England. He and Jane immigrated to South Africa in 1980 where he trained and qualified as a Machinist, a career that served him well in Canada after he arrived in Richmond in 1983 to start a new life. He was the beloved husband of Jane and father of Kevin (16) and Andrew (13) of Armstrong. Terry loved his boys and Jane, and he was a fun, exciting husband and Dad. Special times were spent in Seymour Arm at the lake. The family moved to Armstrong in 1994 and were happy until Terry began to show symptoms of an illness. He was eventually diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy. That was when we started to lose the man as we knew him. "He was our Dad he was love. God gave him to us from above. When we recall his smiling face, we remember Terry’s gentle grace. When he could no longer bear the pain, God opened up another door. To heal his heart is what God chose. To give him peace and sweet repose. No longer suffering, no longer in pain. In obeying God he truly gained. We’ll always love you to bits Terry bean. Death sets the soul free to fly". Wife Jane, sons Kevin and Andrew. Survived by parents Paul and Prudence; brothers Tony (Jill) and Paul (Janice); sisters Lauren and Sandy (Bruce); nephews and neices; all in South Africa. A Celebration of Terry’s Life was held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 at St. James Anglican Church, Armstrong. Rev. Cory Rundell officiating. Cremation. VON HARTEN Peter von Harten remembered A private family remembrance was held for the late Carl Peter Constantine Lehman von Hartenwho died March 6 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. He was 70. Born at Vancouver on Jan. 6, 1932, Mr. Von Harten had worked in several communities throughout B.C. including Nakusp, Armstrong and New Aiyansh. When he was in Armstrong in the early eighties, Mr. Von Harten was Director of Works and Services for the City of Armstrong. He also served as president of the Kindale Association. Prior to coming to this area, Mr. Von Harten was an alderman for the Village of Nakusp. He was always interested in sports and played on the original B.C. Lions football team. Later he became involved playing rugby and lately had enjoyed seniors curling. Mr. Von Harten is survived by his wife Lynda at Vernon, son Michael (Lucille) and granddaughter Joelle at Faro, Yukon, mother-in-law Mildred Hughes at Vernon, brother-in-law Richard Hughes (Ann) at Vernon, nieces and nephews. The private family remembrance was held with cremation following.
