YUZWA

Paul Yuzwa services held

Services for the late Paul Frank Gordon Yuzwa were held at Saskatoon, Sask., on Jan. 13 following his death on Jan. 10. Mr. Yuzwa taught high school at Armstrong for about 16 years in the fifties and sixties and was popular both with students and his peers as well as throughout the Armstrong community. Born at Wakaw District, Sask. On Dec. 14, 1921, Mr. Yuzwa served in the ground crew with the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, most of the time in Burma. He returned, received his teaching qualifications at the University of British Columbia, he taught for two years at Amithers. There it turned out that the superintendent of schools in that school district had been Mr. Yuzwa’s colonel while in Burma. Accepting a teaching position at Armstrong, he taught social studies and English here. He was well known for his rich baritone voice and was a featured singer at each year’s Christmas school assembly where he sang "O Holy Night." In the fall of 1968, the Yuzwa family moved to Saskatoon where he continued teaching at Holy Cross Collegiate. Mr. Yuzwa furthered his education, obtaining his degree in library science and was a key moving force in developing and enlarging the school’s library three times. It followed his great love for reading. He retired in 1980 due to poor health. He had a stroke which he recovered. Through alternative medicine, his health improved until spring last year. Throughout his life, Mr. Yuzwa took an active role in both the Catholic Church and the Ukrainian community.

Mt. Yuzwa is survived by his wife, Helene, at Saskatoon and their six children.

Prayers were held at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church on Jan. 12. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the same church on Jan. 13. Interment followed in The Garden of Good Shepherd Hillcrest Memorial Gardens at Saskatoon.
