Armstrong Spallumcheen Cemetery
North of Vernon on Highway 97A, proceed to Armstrong.
Beginning at McDonald's Restaurant on Smith Drive |
in Armstrong, proceed north on Smith Drive, turning left
as it becomes Pleasant Valley Road (signs designate this). |
Go west to Okanagan Street, turn right for 1 block to Wood
Ave., turn left and proceed to Highland Park Road. |
Turn right onto this road. 1.9 km. later turn left and the
gate to the cemetery will be apparent on your right. |
The cemetery is well kept, the road frontage is fenced
with stone posts and chain between. The setting is one |
of quiet and peace - there is a farm on either side and
the back boundary is at a steep ravine. Many large trees |
provide a picturesque setting against the mountains of the
valley. |
On the west side of the cemetery about 50 meters
north of the main road, are a number of Chinese graves. There |
are 8 markers with Chinese characters on them. I am
told that people with kin here (in Canada) were given |
markers, those who were alone were not. Since there
were a large number of Chinese in Armstrong, and they |
are the pioneers of this area, I feel they should be
mentioned here, whether or not we can read the stones. LE |
