Historical Background

The property on which the Notch Hill Cemetery is located was donated by John McIntyre in 1900. The earliest record of a burial is 1903. There are many unmarked graves in the cemetery and no record exists.

One interesting grave in this cemetery holds the remains of five men. According to British Columbia Division of Vital Statistics and newspaper records these men were accidently killed through the wreck of train car on which they were stealing a ride on Tuesday, June 22nd, 1909. The five men were reported to be of ages 20 to 50, of foreign appearance, names unknown.

This cemetery is approximately 1.5 acres in size; it is enclosed with a wire fence and gate. It is well maintained and currently in use. The graves are laid out east/west, with the exception of one baby grave which appears to be north/south. There are 108 marked graves but many unmarked graves. The book Memories of Notch Hill by the Notch Hill Heritage Society has a list of individuals, who are believed to be buried in this cemetery, including:

Driving Directions

There are two ways to approach this cemetery:

  1. From the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) between Sicamous (4.5 km) and Balmoral (5 km) turn south on Hilltop Road and proceed for 3.6 km.

    The Notch Hill Cemetery is located on the left hand side of the road.

  2. From the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) in Sorrento turn south on Notch Hill Road and proceed for 5.3 km.

    Go straight on Hilltop Road when you reach the junction of Notch Hill and Hilltop Road.

    Travel for approximately 200 metres and the cemetery is located on the right.
