CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS-LANSDOWNE AT ARMSTRONG B.C.

LANSDOWNE CEMETERY
The town of Lansdowne was located on benchland above the valley where Armstrong is
now located. With the coming of the railway near the turn of the century the center of
population moved down into the valley and the town center of Lansdowne disappeared.
The Lansdowne cemetery, however, continued to be used into the 1940's.
It is located approximately 3 miles North of Armstrong  on McLeery Road.
Coming from the south on Highway 97B pass the traffic light at the Armstrong turn off , go 1.4 km. then turn left onto Lansdowne Road.
Stay on Lansdowne for 2.8 km., turn right onto McLeery, and  in .5 km. you are at the cemetery gate.

This is a Pioneer Cemetery and well kept up. A  chain link fence has been installed recently
and we noted "Bluebird Boxes" hung on it.
An Armstrong youth group have been in charge of mowing the grass - we owe them our thanks.
There are a number of wooden markers that are not legible.

There are some historical notes  on the Lansdowne cemetery at the end of the inscription list.

Notes on the Lansdowne Cemetery by Louise Everest

August 12, 1997 a visit was paid to Spallumcheem Municipal Hall and a request made to peruse the Lansdowne Cemetery Records. The kind folks at the Municipal Hall gave me a very yellow and brittle old ledger type of book, in which were the records. The writing poor and the ink faded, so what follows is only as accurate as what I saw at the moment. Hopefully it will be useful to a few and intersting to more.

On the inside front cover was a newspaper clipping, which reads as follows:

B.F.Young...lot 1 and 2...Block 24

J.Hunter...........1.......................5

J. Hamill...........5......................4

W. Buker..........4.....................23

R. Hill...............6......................6

A.E.Morgan......1.......................8

A. Evans..........4.......................1

Hardy & Wright.6.......................9

(R. Hill and A.E. Morgan are drawn through with pencil)

There were a number of separate pieces of paper tucked inside the front cover, two were legal descriptions of Hullcar and Landsdowne Cemeteries and several more were burial permits. All are recreated here to the best of my ability.
