CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS-MARA B.C.

MARA CEMETERY
The Mara  cemetery is located on the west side of  Highway 97A just north of the Mara Store and
7.8 kilometers north of the bridge in Grindrod.
Trees have recently been cleared from around the cemetery, the grass is neatly mown and evidence
of good care is present. The road frontage has a white fence with iron gates.

A possible explanation for the places deaths occurred besides at home would be: they were elderly
and staying with relatives in another town or area; they were ill and hospitalized  - for example
Enderby would have had a small hospital, Vernon and Kamloops larger hospitals and for very
serious illnesses one would have gone to "the coast" to a facility in Vancouver.
Tranquille is part of the city of Kamloops. In years gone by a facility for the mentally challenged
was located there.  Some thoroughfares in Kamloops still bear the name Tranquille.
Though infrequent in small centres in  the earlier half of the century, senior citizens homes
were available in larger towns and cities, for those who could afford them. When they passed on
they were returned to their home town for burial.
