1898 Vernon Directories

City Fathers for 1897

In the Dominion Electoral District of Yale-Cariboo, Provincial East Riding of Yale and Mining Recording Division of Vernon, is situated on the line of the Shuswap and Okanagan Rwy, four miles from its terminus on Okanagan Lake, and is the centre of one of the largest and richest agricultural districts in the Interior. Since the advent of railway communication the town has grown wonderfully and is a duly incorporated City. There is a post, money order office and post office savings bank, also telegraph and express office, and a daily mail service. There is also a branch of the Bank of Montreal and an office of the Wulffsohn banking and financial firm. Vernon is the great distributing point for the Lower Country, and in addition to its railway connections, it also controls the navigation of the Lake. An ably conducted newspaper, the "Vernon News and Okanagan Farm Live Stock and Mining Journal" is another feature of the progress of Vernon.
